Wide-Eyed Bed. Eristalis tenax, Drone Flies, on Sweet Resin Bush, Euryops lateriflorus, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
In Afrikaans this pretty, sunny plant is called Soetharpuisbos; the 'soet' = 'sweet'; the 'harpuis' is derived from the Dutch 'hars' for 'resin' + 'puistje' for 'pimple'. The sap of the plant is oozed out of its stems in small, pimply shaped droplets. Reportedly it's sweet but poisonous to cattle.
For their multiplication these Drone Flies are 'going at it' on a bright Wide-Eyed (for Euryops), yellow bed.
