Long Pistil. Pitcairnia villetaensis, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
There are lots of different Bromeliads and within that group lots of Pitcairnias. And more kinds of these remarkable plants are still being discovered. The pictured Pitcairnia villetaensis was first described by the botanist expert on Bromeliads, German botanist Werner Rauh (1913-2000), in 1987. It hails from the high forests between Bogota and Villeta in Colombia. I suppose the long pistil and relatively shorter stamens prevent the flower from self-pollination.
