Tulip Star. Tulipa turkestanica, Turkestan Tulip, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The Hortus has put out the usual Tulip Tubs (see yesterday's posting) but there's also a 'cold-earth' Tulip in the Rock Garden. It's used to chilly climes, is Tulipa turkestanica. It was found by Johann Albert von Regel (1845-1908) on the Syr Darja River near what is today Almaty, Kazachstan (then called Wernoje, Turkestan). The Syr Darja is Alexander the Great's Jaxartes, where he met the first strong opposition on his way East. Regel was a physician and posted by the Tsarist government to Kuldja on the outskirts of the Empire on the Chinese border. From there he undertook naturalist expeditions in 'Turkestania' between 1877-1885. He sent his collections to St Petersburg where his father, famous botanist Eduard August von Regel (1815-1892) described them.
