Irish Pink. Daboecia cantabrica, St Dabeoc's Heath, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Across the waters. The name of our pretty Heather derives from western Ireland and from the Cantabrian Mountains in Asturias, Spain. The plant grows in both areas and also on the Canary Islands. The common name St Dabeoc hails from Ireland - there are several saints, though, of that name and it's unclear for which one this heather was named. That name was first recorded around 1700 by Welshman Edward Lhuyd (1660-1709), jack-of-all-trades: a naturalist and also a linguist.
