High above the River, View of the Rhine, Stolzenfels Castle, Koblenz, Germany

Faux Medieval. The ruins of what was once a medieval burg were given to the later king of Prussia, Frederick William IV (1795-1861). In pursuit of his romantic 'feeling' for the Middle Ages he had a reconstruction made as his summer palace (1842). I ambled up the left bank of the Rhine from Koblenz with views of the castle all along the way, pondering about the dangers of romanticism paired with divine right of government that was a hallmark of the king. But then, once I'd climbed the steep path to the castle and navigated all kinds of stairs to this place, I was myself overwhelmed with medievalist feelings, however discombobulated. Ah! that view! Das Rheingold! That faux medieval architecture... And the Eternal Rhine.
