Crying Wolf. Flesh Fly, Sarcophaga sp., on Lycopus europaeus, Wolf's Claw or Water Horehound, Our Garden, Venlo, The Netherlands
Our plant is called Wolf's Claw or Lycopus because its foliage resembles the claw of that beast. No! 'Horehound' is not a scurrilous wink at the Latin name. Indeed, 'hore' has to do with 'hoary' or 'white-haired' and 'hound' with the ancient name of a plant, says the grand old OED.
The tiny rosette flowers of Lycopus are very pretty, but this Flesh Fly probably doesn't care. It's after nutrients.
Just a little Pond Scene.
