Climber. Wisteria chinensis, Chinese Wisteria, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Hugo de Vries (1848-1935) - together with two fellow botanists - was de rediscoverer of the laws of genetic inheritance developed by Gregor Johann Mendel (1822-1884). In fact, he coined the word 'gene'. De Vries became professor of botany at the local university and the director of the Hortus.

He was much sought after by foreign universities and in order to tie him to Amsterdam, the authorities decided to build him a large, personal laboratory in the newest architectural style - the so-called Amsterdam School. It was constructed between 1910-1912. In 1948 it was named the Hugo de Vries Botanisch Laboratorium in his honor. After another name change it is today called De Groene Plantage, the Green Plantation.

Soon after its completion (in 1915) this Chinese Wisteria was planted on the garden side of the building; and it began to climb.

Today it was particularly colorful against the Blue Sky.
