Island Viewing. Roman Helmet and Veronica persica, Speedwell, Lent, Nijmegen, The Netherlands
The splendid early Spring afternoon drew me out to walk on the island in the Waal River between the city of Nijmegen and the town of Lent on the opposite side (you can see Lent's church in the far right).
In 1915 dredging activities in the river brought up a first century Roman cavalry helmet. You can see it in a museum in Nijmegen. Andreas Hetfeld (1965-) in 2020 made this huge replica - about 6 metres high - called 'Viewpoint' which was placed on the island. It's still very early Spring but I did see a few Speedwell flowers, Veronica persica (inset), there.
