Yellow-tipped Spring. Leucojum vernum, Spring Snowflake, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Delightful in the late-winter garden, this wonderful Spring Snowflake. Great as Carolus Linnaeus is, he sometimes makes a small mistake in reference. In his entry for our Flower, he refers to the name under which Paul de Reneaulme (1560-1624) describes it in Greek letters as Oliganthemon (something like single-flowered). He correctly quotes page (98 and) 99 of Reneaulme's Specimen historiae plantarum (1611), and he adds that there's a drawing of it on page 100 (see inset). But that drawing is of another Leucojum, no doubt as pretty as ours but different. Reneaulme labels it as Polyanthemon (many-flowered, as indeed the picture demonstrates).
But who cares when they look upon this beauty in our Hortus!
