First Business. Gaasperplas and the Bees, Apis mellifera, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

At the northeastern end of the Gaasperplas there's an apiary I like to visit when the temperature is right. For Bees to be flying out that's about 10 C. Today on New Year's Day the temperature soared amazingly to about 13 C. A record was broken for this area. Anyway...

So I went to have a look. Indeed, Bees were taking a little outing out of the warmth and closeness of their nest to shallow Sun out of doors. Nothing here in the way of nectar; all is still barren. But search for sweetness was not their goal. They stayed quite near their hive. Our Bees were taking care of their 'first business'; that is to say, they were cleaning out their guts - to phrase it delicately. As soon as they were done within a few metres of the hive, they quickly returned to its warmth.
