Drying Wings. Cormorants, Phalacrocorax carbo, Flevopark, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
As a schoolboy I was intrigued by John Milton's image in book IV of Paradise Lost of Satan who, in the form of a Cormorant, sat on the Tree of Life regarding the sweetness of Eden while contemplating his attack. Then as now, I can't imagine how Cormorants are a sign of evil. They're beautiful birds, I think, and they lift up my heart whenever I see them. Here they are drying their wings in the sparse, low winter sunlight that's turned the pond into shimmering gold.
