In 1855 well-known Andrew Murray (1812-1878), Scottish naturalist, published a description of the trees which his brother William and the latter's traveling companion A.F. Beardsley had seen on their Expedition in northern California in 1854. Of our Cypress - Chamaecyparis lawsoniana - he writes enthusiastically that it was 'the handsomest tree seen in the whole Expedition... the foliage is most delicate and graceful'. This rare tree has lived in the Hortus Botanicus for over a century and you can go to look at it to ascertain its beauty.
