Worse for Wear. Carpenter Bee, Xylocopa sp., on Aptenia cordifolia, Iceplant, and Maranga Ruins, Parque de las Leyendas, Lima, Peru

The wonderful Parque de las Leyendas in Lima is something you shouldn't miss when you visit Peru's capital. It's one of the most interesting 'Zoos' I've ever visited. The 'animal' part is immaculately clean, and though it hasn't got many varieties of beasts, they seem very well taken care of. The Botanical Garden is devoted especially to a great collection of pine trees, agaves, bromeliads and the like.

But perhaps most intriguing is that this place is set up within archaeololgical ruins of the Maranga Civilisation. It lasted from about 600 BCE to around 1500 CE and the Inca Culture displaced by the Spanish. There's lots to see and a small but exquisite museum about the finds gives really fine information (but if you don't know Spanish you'll have a diffiult time; the photos and diagrams, though, are easy to understand).

Of course, the adobe and mud ruins are quite the worse for wear, much like the wings of our Carpenter Bee.
