Dramatic Kaleleka'anae... The Ko'olau Range from Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens, O'ahu, Hawai'i, USA

This is dramatic landscape in more than geographical and 'light' sense. Up there on the cliff's edges was fought one of the most ferocious battles of the history of Hawai'i: Kaleka'anae, the Battle of the Leaping Mullet (May 1795). King Kamehameha I the Great, the great unifier of Hawai'i, had driven the army of his opponent on O'ahu, King Kalanikupule, right to these steeps of the Ko'olau Range. Rather than give themselves up, they jumped to their deaths...

Nothing today reminds of this. The setting below these cliffs is that of the majestic Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens with its lakes and forests. A wonderful day might be spent there.

Amid the concrete surroundings of the Airport, waiting for my Seoul-bound flight, I reminisce.
