Smelling Sweet. Bombus terrestris, Large Earth Bumblebee, on Honey Clover, Melilotus albus, Frankendael, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The sweet smell of freshly cut grass or hay is caused by an organic chemical called coumarin. Honey Clover contains a lot of it and in dried packets it's been used down through the centuries to scent clothing or bed linens.

This Clover - you can hardly not notice - attracts all kinds of insects, especially Bees. Here it's being visited by a Large Earth Bumblebee.
