Freckled Blue. A Crayola Katydid Nymph, Scudderia cuneata, on Water Thistle, Neptunia plena, Paramaribo, Suriname

Nope. I don't know what kind of Long Jumper this is. Anyone out there in Flickrland? Do get back to me.

Traipsing about in the shore bushes and mangroves of the Suriname River to see what I could see, I came upon this tiny critter. So small I actually needed my magnifying glass to see its spots...

It's alert on Water Thistle, a Mimosa sort called Neptunia plena. It was called scientifcally by great Carolus Linneus in 1753: Mimosa plena; but renamed to Neptunia by the Jesuit missionary to China who was also a foremost botanist, João de Loureiro (1717-1791) in 1790. He based his observations on a Chinese exemplar, but the plant is pantropical. I've seen Neptunias in Indonesia and Malaysia, too.

Not a freckling person myself but the Sun was so sharp I might have become one if I'd stayed out any longer.

PS 2017.x.18: A friend Jan-Wouter Zwart of Groningen identified our Jumper as this Crayola Katydid. I'm very grateful.
