Eleionomaean Glade. Frankendael Park, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Pretty Frankendael Park is only a short tram ride away from the centre of Amsterdam, but in the sixteenth century the entire area was still a lake called Watergraafsmeer. It was made into a polder, and soon wealthy families of Amsterdam began to build their country manors on the reclaimed land. The only one of these still existing today is Frankendael. It's on the edge of a fine park with a stylised garden but also wilder areas and a pretty little herbal patch as well.
The Rain came down in Torrents as we sat in a pleasant restaurant nearby; but soon the weather cleared up enough so we could amble off our copious lunch. I wandered away a bit alone and came upon this Mysterious Glade and for a minute thought I was being enthralled by Eleionomaean Naiads. Just in time I pulled away and rejoining my companion hurried to take a tram back into the City. Safe...
