Staring Down. Caligo memnon, Giant Owl Butterfly, Butterfly House, Natura Artis Magistra, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
There they were, hanging from a low branch just over a walkway in the Butterfly House of the Amsterdam Zoo, these two love-bird Butterflies. The name 'owl', obviously, derives from the great Owl-Eye-like spots on their wings. And they are indeed huge Flutterers, too, or more perhaps: Gliders. You can almost hear their Owl-like swoosh as they slide from shadow to shadow, Shadow-Brownish themselves as 'Caligo' suggests.
Why Caligos are often specifically named for heroes of the Trojan War - like Memnon - I don't know. Heroes will of course, be able to stare down anyone questioning or even amused by their public behavior...
