Bright in Dark Summer. Arge cyanocrocea, Bramble Sawfly, on Parsnip, Pastinaca sativa, Stadsboerderij 'De Wiershoeck', Beijum, Groningen, The Netherlands
Amazingly difficult to get the orange of our Beautiful Sawfly just right for a photo. It's so very bright that my camera almost refuses to 'look'... Perhaps 'Arge' is connected to the word for bright or silvery in Greek... Alas! Georg Wolfgang Franz Panzer (1755-1829), its name-giver, is no longer around to explain himself! But on this dreary, cold, wet and generally dismal Longest Day of the Year, the photo brings some Light to our eyes.
Here's Arge on Parsnip, Pastinaca sativa. That tuberous root I associate with the fine Winter Mash for dinner in my youth!
PS Thanks to Thijs de Graaf for correcting my earlier 'pagana' to 'cyanocrocea'
