Cloistral Purple. Bearded Irises, The Cloister, St Martin's Church (De DOM), Utrecht, The Netherlands
The enormous church towering over Utrecht is devoted to St Martin. Familiarly in The Netherlands it's called 'De DOM'. Once a cathedral, it became an ordinary church with the Protestant Revolution of 1580. The DOM-tower - highest church tower in The Netherlands - was built between 1321 and 1382. It's a symbol of medieval architectural cunning and prowess; in fact, it was sometimes seen as proof of the pride of 'modern men'.
Geert Grote (1340-1384), founder of the Modern Devotion with its hallmark of Christian Simplicity and himself a canon of the Cathedral, inveighed heavily against this 'new Tower of Babel'. He even wrote a treatise decrying the pride of its constructors.
Today I paid little attention to the powerful tower engraved sharply on the bright blue, Cold Sky. Instead I spent a while this afternoon in the humble Cloister where once monks perambulated reading their books of hours. Here are the Bearded Irises that I contemplated.
