To Use or Not to Use. Malayan False Pimpernel, Lindernia crustacea, and Oecophylla smaragdina, Weaver Ants, KLCC Park, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Returned to Kuala Lumpur, I made for KLCC Park to see if 'my' nest of Weaver Ants - see a photo I posted on Christmas Eve - had survived the gardeners' cleaning and leaf-blowing diligence. Much to my delight it was still there and again I spent some time watching my Friends, and experimenting a bit.
I dropped various bits of vegetation on the nest. The yellow stamen ends of Hibiscus Flowers were quickly cleaned away and dropped off the nest into the grass. Little scarlet pieces of Hibiscus Flower petals were avidly carried away into the nest. Then I picked a tiny but pretty Malayan False Pimpernel, Lindernia crustacea (www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/6611399323/in/photolis...). The Weavers at first seemed unsure what to do with it. But in the end it, too, was dragged away and disappeared into the bowels of their Home.
