View of the top of the layout, with the layout resting on an edge. The top is covered with single sheets of white foamcore (foamboard). Overall size of the layout is 5 feet long by slightly less than 4 feet wide. I didn't have any sheets of foamcore that big, so I pieced together the top with sheets of smaller foamcore. The three openings are where there will be lowered water features for scenery. For the most part, these lowered areas have a solid foamcore sheet under them, attached to the bottom of the layout. The gaps (where you see through) are around where the hooks used for hanging will pass through a wood beam. I decided I still need access to these areas from the bottom, and I also need to keep them unobstructed for the hooks and their mounts when hanging; I'll need to decide in the future how to finish these areas.
