Gravel for parking lot reconstruction

Aggregate (gravel) base layers being prepared as part of the reconstruction of an asphalt parking lot.

The gravel layer showing on the left is probably WisDOT Select Crushed Material, a relatively coarse gravel ranging from 1/8 inch to 5 inches in diameter, with at least half (by weight) greater than 1 1/2 inches in diameter. This layer was placed directly over the soil subgrade, and then rolled for compaction.

The material in the skidsteer loader bucket and in the pile is a finer aggregate, and is being spread and compacted on top of the coarse layer. It looks like a “dense graded” aggregate, probably either a “3/4 inch minus” or “1 1/4 inch minus” aggregate. Two layers of asphalt paving material will be built on top of this finer aggregate layer.
