2013-11-11 - Metropolitan Museum of Art - American Wing court balcony - Chinese Export Porcelain
"China's expertise, artistry, and infrastructure ensured that it would supply much of the world's porcelain from the sixteenth through the eighteenth century. Americans acquired high-quality Chinese ceramics first via trade with England and, after 1784, through direct trade with China. Individuals ordered custom dinner services and other items embellished with their monograms, coats of arms, and other important symbols. Chinese designers and craftsmen also produced porcelain specifically for the American market, often decorated with patriotic motifs or inscribed and ornamented to commemorate a specific event. Extensive dinner services with elaborate decoration remained popular well into the nineteenth century."
