Sitting room, Château de Villandry

European mini-trip day 4, Château #4

Arriving late in the afternoon meant that we had limited time to view the interior of the château, so we went inside first.

The sitting room here contains chairs, furnishings typical of the Louis XV and Louis XIV periods. Much of Villandry's original furniture was removed when the château was confiscated during the French Revolution. Emperor Napoleon subsequently acquired it for his brother Jérôme Bonaparte in the first half of the 19th century. The estate then went into disrepair.

In 1906, Joachim Carvallo purchased the property and he and his wife worked tirelessly to restore the château and the gardens to the original designs of Breton and Castellane. The château remains in the Carvallo family and is currently managed by Joachim's great grandson, Henri, who is particularly passionate about developing and maintaining the gardens.
