july mantle
it's been awhile, no?
for at least a couple of months it's been a solid line up on there of critters made by the boys in clay class this spring (a cobra snake, a zebra - i believe - or maybe it's a raccoon or a horse?, a 'very-hairy fox', a pink wolf, etc), with a few needle felted owls that we did together one day amongst the menagerie.
while i put them all up there partly to appreciate the charming, endearing qualities, and the cleverness of each creation, it was also partly just a place to put all that productivity!
well...since then, things had been increasingly reaching towards a state of utter chaos around here, and the mantle was feeling no less so, as other bits 'n' bobs 'n' things were starting to accumulate up there, and on every other horizontal surface in sight...as bits 'n' bobs 'n' things have a tendencey to do.
something had to give. we'd just spent three days living out of our backpacks and, upon returning, i suddenly needed to reclaim this small space to create a little order, serenity, and to bring a little of the outdoors inside. something like this was what i was what i kept flashing on. that was all i needed.
it all just started falling into place: the volunteer valerian coming up here and there around the yard needed their blossoms cut off so as to prevent their reseeding and becoming a nuisance in future years - there's a bouquet.
then there were the daisies - truly a noxious weed by official status, albeit the prettiest of ones - popping up all over the place, too.
and the wild white yarrow coming into bloom here and there...
and that named white yarrow, 'the pearl', blooming right next to the front door, but nearly overridden with grass going to seed, and so going almost unnoticed.
and that is where i stopped myself, even if the northern bedstraw are starting to show up in spots, and the lovely but foreboding death camas is the next white wildflower soon to be in blossom out by the swingset....
striving for some order, a little restraint, even if only here in this little spot, with this attempt at a tamed version of that naturally occurring, resplendent abundance, felt of the forests through which we walked last weekend.
all those animal figurines, where did they go? why, they're all just piled on an end table below and to the left of this pic, waiting to be adopted to their new homes, so, as you can see, the serenity is only an illusion.
