darn it all

alice won these socks several years back at an fundraising auction for the community arts & dance studio.

over the years, she wore holes right through the socks under the balls of her feet.

we tried to work out a time for me to teach her how to darn them. when that never happened, she finally just returned them to me, asking me to fix the holes myself. i almost returned them to her, deeming them irreparable, almost just threw them away myself. leaving them next to the trash bin for several days, but unable to actually toss them inside it.

then, instead, last tuesday, i brought them along to "knitting night at jerry's saloon". i still had the leftover sock yarn i'd used in knitting the socks themselves.

unfortunately, i'd forgotten to bring a darning egg along. fortunately, i spotted a light bulb out and, climbing on a chair, pulled it down to slip inside the socks during the mending.

soon they were fixed right up, almost painlessly, thanks the good company, and a glass or two of wine.

i expect to see these socks again in the not-so-far future, for further darning.
