"house hens"...as in the ones with names,

as opposed to the 100 or so nameless ones in chicken tractors out in the field, nearly ready for harvesting.

and, as opposed to the 100 or so nameless hens (+ a handful of roosters) in the far barn nearly ready to begin laying.
