Chapel / Capela de Sta. Marta e de Nossa Senhora das Necessidades

The chapel of Santa Marta is located south of the village of Ericeira, on a plantaforma rocky, now landscaped and surrounded by the urban fabric of the village, is a temple of reasonable proportions to taste eighteenth century, erected in 1760, in place of the old chapel Our Lady of Health, later Lady Needs. The actual construction of the chapel began in 1760 as being at that time the Shrine of Our Lady of Needs, with the Chapel of St. Anthony and Lady of Good Voyage at Largo das Ribas, double patron saint, Santa Marta and Lady Needs.
The old chapel, built in 1484. with the same patron, stood over the sea, next to the "caves" where actuamente is the well of "waters of Santa Marta" the perimeter of the Parque de Santa Marta, and the place of devotion that shrine, connected the miraculous cures of the plague. This was abandoned temple, having entered into ruins.
In 1599, according to legend reported by Frei Agostinho da Santa Maria, the venerated image of Our Lady of Needs was taken by a couple of weavers, to Lisbon, near Alcantara, built a chapel there for the image that came to naming a district, and later to the palace that still retains the same name. This "theft" was assigned because the image is considered miraculous, and faith increased in years when the plague raged in Portugal.
At the end of sec. XIX beginning of XX Century with the discovery of the curative waters near here, was associated with the image of Santa Marta venarava that is already in the chapel, but after these discoveries increased devotion to Santa Marta, and there are references.
The confraternity of Our Lady of Necessities and had headquarters in Santa Marta hermitage.
The chapel of simple lines translates into the artistic taste of the second half of sec. XVIII, both in terms of either the gilded polychrome doretábulo already quite light, and the medium sized images that are presented. In the center altar is the statue of Our Lady of Needs (sec. XVIII) on clouds that appear three-headed angel, holding in her arms, with his left hand the Child and with the right hand stick-tocheiro, where see the candle. on the right, side of the Gospel, St. Martha, image estofadatendo feet and a dragon holding a ribbon with your right hand, and embracing the cross with his left hand, the left side an image of the epistle of St. Lucia ( sec. XIX). In nature, only an image of Our Lady of Fatima (XX century) and an image of S. Joseph (sec. XXI) of both small proportions.
It was also home to the chapel of the confraternity unmarried girls, who then held processions and festivities in honor of the invocations patents there, but eventually lost after following a merge in the ceremonies of the day of St. Peter (patron saint of the parish).
To emphasize two panels of tiles sec. XVIII representing the Angel's Annunciation and the Birth of Jesus.

A actual capela de Stª Marta situa-se ao sul da Vila da Ericeira, sobre uma plantaforma rochosa, hoje ajardinada e envolvida pela malha urbana da vila, é um templo de razoáveis proporções ao gosto setecentista, erigida em 1760, no lugar da antiga Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Saúde, posteriormente Senhora das Necessidades. A construção da actual capela iniciada pois em 1760, sendo nessa época Santuário de Nossa Senhora das Necessidades, tendo como a Capela de Santo António e Senhora da Boa Viagem no Largo das Ribas, duplo orago: Santa Marta e Senhora das Necessidades.
A antiga capela, construída em 1484. com o mesmo orago, situava-se mais junto ao mar, junto às "furnas", onde actuamente se encontra o poço das "Águas de Sta. Marta" no perímetro do Parque de Santa Marta, sendo a referida ermida local de devoção, ligada a curas milagrosas de peste. Foi este templo abandonado, por ter entrado em ruínas.
Em 1599, segundo a lenda referida por Frei Agostinho da Santa Maria, a Venerada imagem de Nossa Senhora das Necessidades foi levada por um casal de tecelões, para Lisboa, perto de Alcantara, ai edificaram uma capela para a imagem, que veio a dar nome a um bairro, e mais tarde ao palácio que ainda hoje conserva o mesmo nome. Esse "furto" foi atribuido em virtude da imagem ser considerada milagrosa, sendo a fé acrescida nos anos em que em Portugal grassou a peste.
Nos finais do sec. XIX, inicio do sec XX com a descoberta das capacidades curativas das águas ali próximas, associou-se a imagem de Sta Marta que já se venarava na capela, mas que após essas descobertas a devoção a Sta. Marta aumentou, havendo até referências .
As confrarias de Nossa Senhora das Necessidades e de Sta Marta tinham sede nesta ermida.
A actual capela de linhas simples transpõe para o interior o gosto artistico da segunda metade do sec. XVIII, quer ao nível da talha dourada quer na policromia doretábulo, já com bastante leveza, e nas imagens de médias proporções que se apresentam. No altar ao centro está a imagem de Nossa Senhora das Necessidades (sec. XVIII),sobre nuvens em que aparecem três cabeças de anjo, segurando ao colo, com a mão esquerda o Menino e com a mão direita a vara-tocheiro, onde se encontra a vela. á direita , do lado do Evangelho, Sta. Marta , imagem estofadatendo aos pés um dragão e segurando uma fita com a sua mão direita e, abraçando a cruz com a mão esquerda, á esquerda do lado da epístola uma imagem de Sta. Luzia (sec. XIX). Na nave, única, uma imagem de Nossa Senhora de Fátima (sec.XX) e uma imagem de S. José (sec. XXI) ambas de pequenas proporções.
Foi também esta capela sede de confraria das raparigas solteiras, que aí realizavam procissões e festejos, em honra das invocações aí patentes, mas que acabaram por se perder após após uma integração nas cerimónias do dia de S. Pedro (orago da paróquia).
De salientar dois paineis de azulejos do sec. XVIII representando a Anunciação do Anjo e o Nascimento de Jesus.
O largo da capela com habitações em redor único na vila, remonta ao tempo do santuário mariano, com as casas para peregrinos
