Is a municipality in Portugal with a total area of 567.2 km² and a total population of 7,702 inhabitants. The municipality of Castro Verde is composed of 5 parishes of which the town of Castro Verde is the municipal seat, located in the District of Beja. Castro Verde is situated in the Lower - (Baixo Alentejo (subregion)) Alentejo within the territory known as the Campo Branco (White Plains). A large part of the municipality lies within the Natura 2000 project of the European Union denoted as a Special Protection Area (SPA) for endangered species of steppe birds such as the Great Bustard and Lesser Kestrel. The borders of the municipality are marked on the main roads leading into the territory with the logo emblem of the area - the 'County Marker' (A Window Over The Plains).
The present Mayor is Francisco José Caldeira Duarte, Unitarian Democratic Coalition.
Castro Verde received its Town Charter - (Foral) in 1510 by order of King Manuel I of Portugal. The population of the town is 4,820 (2009). The year of 2010 will mark the 500th anniversary of the Town Charter.
