the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Klodzko, Poland

You are standing close to the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the oldest in Kłodzko surviving to the present day. Its rich architectural forms, ornaments and embellished interior are closely bound up with its magnificent history. The church appeared in written documents for the first time in the early 12th century. It was at that time most probably a very small wooden structure. The foundation stone for the present church was laid by the local Knights Hospitaller. The Kłodzko region, at that time a part of the Kingdom of Bohemia, was formally incorporated into the Archdiocese of Prague. The construction of the church actually began only after the death of Ernest of Pardubice, the first Archbishop of Prague and principal founder. Before he died, he bequeathed a large sum of money in order that the works could be continued. Completion took a long time, however, as the turbulence of the times, the wars and the fires were continuously interrupting.
