40109 Guide Bridge 15th October 1977

This was taken from the DAA/D+EG St Pancras-Manchester Piccadilly Peaks Express re-run tour on Saturday 15th October 1977. I am not 100% certain of the location but I believe we are passing 40109 looking east between Guide Bridge East & West Jcts with the wires on the connecting spur between Guide Bridge East & North Jcts visible on the left. If this is so then those bushes to the left of the 40 are above the northern portal of a tunnel on the Denton Jct-Stalybridge via Hooley Hill line that went beneath the east end of the stabling point, under the main line & emerged in the middle of the triangle to the left. I visited this square section tunnel in 1996 & found it still there but partially flooded. On a subsequent visit in 2009 almost all trace of the northern portal had vanished.
