Bison's History: The 1910's

1910 (East.)

Record: 69-81 - .460 (6)

Mgr. - Billy Smith

PERFECT GAME

Heinie Smith had gone to Montreal as manager. In his place with the Bisons was another Smith, Billy, late of Atlanta of the Southern League.

The '10 Bisons needed a doctor in the dugout more than a manager. At one time in mid-season shortstop Charley Starr was out with a broken wrist; first baseman Ed Sabrie had a turned ankle; pitcher George Merritt had a broken arm; Alva Williams was catching with two broken fingers; outfielder George Schirm was on crutches, and pitcher Chet Carmichael had a split finger.

Split finger or not, righthander Carmichael wrote Eastern League history on Aug. 9 at Jersey City by pitching the league's first perfect nine-inning game. Oddly, the losing pitcher in this 1-0 contest was long-time Buffalo favorite, Rube Kisinger, who had been traded to the Skeeters early in the season.

In addition to Kisinger and Heinie Smith (he returned to Buffalo later in the season, after being fired at Montreal), other familiar faces had departed the Buffalo scene. Nattie Nattress, shortstop since '02, had been traded to Montreal and former manager Lew McAllister dealt to Toronto.

Local boy Mickey Corcoran, who always said he felt the pressure of playing before his home-town fans, went AWOL on Sept. 8. The next day he told President Stein he had been "sick." A few days later he was kicked upstairs to Cincinnati, where he made his major league debut on Sept. 16 with two hits.

Husky Jean Dubuc, a righthander from St. Johnsbury, Vt., was 0-6 for the Bisons. In just two years he would be a starter for the Tigers and log a 17-10 record. When his playing days were over he became a scout for the Tigers. His best-known signing was slugger Hank Greenberg.
