As backpackers in Cuba, our options were limited. Rather than pay megabucks to stay in a dubious hotel, we rented rooms or apartments off locals. There always seemed to be someone who knew someone with lodgings to rent. This way we got to meet real people and experience Cuban hospitality first hand.
