What Plugged In Here?

Does anybody know what this might be? It looks as if it hasn't been used in decades. It's built into a wall of the George Eastman House. Not far away is a modern two-outlet electrical plug. The little door closes quite securely.

 

(Hmmmm! That's odd. When I try and put "??" in the tag area nothing shows up!)
