Brief Encounter

...in the Refreshment room on Carnforth Station

Brief Encounter is one of the most popular romantic British films of all time and ranks second in the British Film Institute’s Top 100 ‘best British films’ list. David Lean’s classic 1945 film was partially shot at Carnforth Station and has captured the imagination of audiences for more than sixty years.

Most of the platform scenes were filmed at Carnforth. The external filming of the "Milford Junction" refreshment room used film "flats" specially erected on Carnforth station.

The interior films scenes of the Milford Junction refreshment took place on a set at Denham studios. The set however, bore a very close resemblance to the genuine refreshment room at Carnforth station. The station has been voted the 8th most romantic film location in the country.
