Caedmon's cross
Caedmon lived in the 7th century (this cross not of this date!). He began adult life as an illiterate labourer but later became a monk at Whitby abbey and is the earliest known English poet.
The 'Hild' depicted is the abbess at the time - Abbess Hilda.
The cross stands in Whitby, St Mary's graveyard, at the top of the 199 steps, overlooking the harbour mouth.
