Springvale Cemetery Original Entrance
Approximate site of the original entrance to Springvale Cemetery - the original can be seen in the 1945 aerial photography here. Note the original diagonal roads to the Union Jack layout are now gone, except for the two diverging roads East Cres and West Cres leading from the main entrance.
This photo was taken approximately in the same location as this one in 1945 which shows the procession heading in the original entrance gate, with the railway embankment and bridge over Dandenong Road clearly seen in the background. The last train ran on the line on 11 November 1947 with the overhead removed in August 1951 with the official closure on 19 December 1951. The bridge was later demolished to allow for the widening of Dandenong Road which happened in two stages: from Dandenong to around Corrigan Road in 1955 and to the Springvale junction in 1964. The railway today would run through the petrol station across the road, Corrigan Road and the current Sandown Racecourse (1965). Corrigan Road originally did not meet here, but instead via current day Racecourse Road, which is now a local street behind the Sandown Park Hotel
The original entrance curved close to Boyd Chapel but was later straightened out to become an exit only to Dandenong Road which remains today. The current entrance is around 100 metres away.
