Geelong Road, Brooklyn - The Guiding Star Deviation

Shot of Geelong Road outside the Guiding Star Hotel with the intersection of Old Geelong Road in Brooklyn. As the name suggests, the latter was the original alignment of the road to Geelong. It deviated from the general line of the route to follow Kororoit Creek in order to ease the grade down to what was originally a ford of the waterway. In the 1960's a bluestone bridge was constructed to replace the ford crossing.

The road was rerouted to its current alignment on the other side of the hotel in 1930 in what was called the 'Guiding Star Deviation'. The old bridge remained forming a kink in the road until it was finally upgraded in 1956.

Incidentally the old timber hotel was replaced with the current Spanish Mission style building in 1930 - with its front entrance facing the new road alignment.
