Gilpin's Bell, Edmonton, London N19

Commemorating the poem “The Diverting History of John Gilpin” written by William Cowper in 1782.
The comic ballad tells of John Gilpin who hired a horse to ride from the City to meet his wife and family at a pub called The Bell in Edmonton but the horse galloped, right past the Bell and on to Ware. Gilpin return but the horse simply galloped all the way back and past the Bell again.
The poem was so popular in America at one time that after St Paul’s Cathedral, tourists were recommended to go to “The Bell” in Edmonton.
