Pudge, RWBL -31

Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoneceus), Southeast corner of Thomson Marsh, Kelowna, BC.

Every spring, I try to find which of the RWBLs of The Marsh is willing to be a star. As they're spaced every 60-90 metres along the edge of the water, there are plenty to choose from, but less than half a dozen will be brazen enough to allow this kind of proximity.

This one inhabits the southeast corner of Thomson Marsh — a prime location that always has a dominant bird. The cattails, however, are 30–50 metres back from the trail and the terrain is often soggy. I decided to see if this fella would let me get close at least while the ground is still firm.

He stayed very calm as I approached. Because he seemed rather stout compared to many other lads I've looked at, I chose to call him Pudge, named after the great MLB catcher, Ivan Rodriguez....

Why three images? Because of the varied backgrounds.... Of the three, I like this one best....
