Green Kingfisher (Chloroceryle americana) -09

Frontera Bird Sanctuary, Weslaco, Texas. Record shot only.

Lifer.

May 3: Texas birding days remaining: this day and three more....

18 shots in today's post, all from the Weslaco-McAllen area, west of Brownsville, and northwest of Estero Llanos Grande.

Based on Ranger-educator Lorena's recommendation, we decided to visit a small civic-run sanctuary — Frontera. While we saw few birds, we got more looks at Chachalacas, saw a Fox Squirrel (lifer) and our main target bird, the Green Kingfisher. Sadly, none of my shots from this shoot quite matched expectations.

Things picked up a bit at a nearby World Birding Center, Quintana-Mazatlan where we again encountered Great Kiskadees.... More in a minute. First, a word from our — oh, you get it....
