Bohemian Waxwing - 02a

(Bombycilla garrulus) Belmont Park, Kelowna, BC.

I've been waiting all winter for these guys to return to attack the Mountain Ash in the backyard of this neighbour. They had taken all the fruit from a tree only four houses away when I first saw them, and the owner had told me that they usually return in February to finish the area. The day before we had chatted and commented that they had not been back yet (although I had seen them along the Mission Creek Greenway several times, but always far above me, unphotographable. So, when, late in the afternoon, a combination of factors, which at the time had felt like bad luck, conspired with the good fortune of taking a walk with my wife, I stumbled across the flock almost in my back yard, and unexpected late afternoon sunlight, I sprang into action and satisfied one of my main goals of the season.... Lots of unpublishables of course, but these made the series cut—some of greater quality than others, but each with some element that means something to me....
