Anno 1899: Reliefs on oldest Art Nouveau building in Riga, Latvia. February 1, 2025

Architects Alfred Aschenkampf, Max Sherwinsky. The building was owned by the book publisher Alexander Grosset. This is a classic example of decorative Art Nouveau, with an asymmetrical arrangement of facades, which fully corresponds to the layout of the building. The facade of the building is decorated with motifs of stylised plants - irises, dandelions, wolfsbane. On the facade of Audēju Street, they are complemented by a stylised apple tree - a symbol of creative power. The branches of the apple tree hide apples, which symbolise wealth, productivity and prosperity. A small bay window with mascots standing on either side, with faces screaming in surprise, also adorns the facade of the building. Metal cantilevers supporting the eaves. The upper storey is shaped like a mansard, flanked by distinctive metal railings. They are designed in a neat, purposeful and rational way to protect pedestrians from avalanches of snow or ice.
