Alfrēds Kalniņš (1879—1951) was a Latvian composer, organist, and conductor, the author of the first Latvian opera Baņuta. He composed many works for voice and piano, choral songs, and folk song settings. The monument was designed in 1966 by the prominent sculptor Teodors Zaļkalns, in 1978-79, it was carved from light grey granite by Kārlis Baumanis; the architects are Ilgvars Batrags and Georgs Baumanis.
