Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Old Town of Riga, Latvia. April 21, 2015
The construction of a new Catholic church building in Riga took place in 1784-1785. It was the first Catholic Church in the city after the Reformation. The Church was dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, who symbolically expressed the oppressed Catholic belief. Russian craftsmen were used extensively in the construction work. The architect and building manager of the church is unknown. Whereas all the buildings at Palace Square were built in the classical style after order of Russian Tsarin Catherine II, the same ought to be observed also building the church. Allegedly it was the well-known architect K.Haberland who gave advices during the construction work of the early classical style building. The Church's rebuilding was performed in 1858-1860, according to plan of architect J.Felsko.
