Repair of antique trumeau
I will define trumeau in this instance as a portion of boiserie that contains a mirror with decorative elements.
The 23k water gilding on this section had been destroyed prior to arriving at my studio and the client preferred the decayed state. So, in this photo my assistant is attempting to remove the remaining oxidized metal paint that had been applied over the original surface. She had previously used solvents to dissolve most of the inappropriate painting. She then applied a wash of tinted latex to blend the colours of the background and the remainder of the medallion. It was finished off with a neutral wax.
