18 Pounder II shell case with markings

The top shell case of an 18 Pounder pot with lots of markings; the shell case has been used four or five times, the fuze once or twice.

E.W.B.C. = E. W. Bliss Company [ New York, USA ]

3/16 = production month: March 1916

CF [ Cordite filled Full Charge ] has been hammered away and replaced by mysterious CS. There were only two kinds of charge: CF = Cordite filled Full Charge and CR = Cordite filled Reduced Charge [ I have never seen CR ] .

CF and 2 x F = 3 x refilled Full Charge

4 arrows [ or crowsfeet ] = 4 x inspected and approved

2 x S = 2 x Scleroscoped

A [ in circle ] = Annealed

T = inspected and disapproved

 

on the [ 4th or 5th ] detonator :

 

No I - III = Fuze number 1 Mark 3

RL = Royal Laboratories, Woolwich Arsenal [ UK ]

1-18 = production month: January 1918 [ not sure; could also be: Fuze No. 1- 18 Pounder ]

8-18 = refilling month: August 1918
