Richard - stranger 240/300

Walking around the grounds of Nottingham’s Highfields Park gave me the chance to approach people to see if I could photograph them for my stranger project. I met Richard and his wife, who he has been married to for twenty years, were on their lunchbreak when I met them whilst looking for someone to photograph among the Rhododendrons. You can see his wife, Helen, as my previous stranger. Even though Richard didn’t like having his picture taken, he still readily agreed to become a stranger for me.

When I began to photograph Richard, the harsh sunlight caused me problems. He was strongly backlit so his face was thrown into deep shadow. A quick change of position solved that, and at the same time the sun momentarily disappeared behind a cloud giving me a much softer and more even light to work with.

Richard is an academic at Nottingham University and he specializes in economics. He has worked there for the last twenty years. When not working he enjoys going to the gym and taking his children to play football, a game Richard also coaches.

I asked Richard who his first star crush had been on and he named American actress Cybill Shepherd as being that person. What one word would Richard use to describe himself? “Average,” he said. If Richard could go back and meet his younger-self, what words of wisdom would he give himself? “Don’t be such a prat!” he said. Finally, I asked Richard what his greatest achievement was, “having kids”, was his reply.

Thank-you Richard, for letting me photograph you for my stranger project, and I hope you like your portrait.

This picture is #240 in the 100 Strangers project, yes, I’ve decided to do a third round. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page
