Daniel - stranger 211/300

Earlier in the day I had photographed stranger 207: Jess. When I’d approached her, she’d been talking to another young lady who had headed off back to work when Jess had agreed to being a stranger for me. Heading back towards the centre of Nottingham I saw the same young lady again (sorry I never did catch her name) talking to two other people outside a tattoo studio and they were obviously on a tea-break, so I headed over to show her the pictures I’d taken of Jess. All of the group knew Jess, which led to questions about the project and one thing led to another and I asked Dan if he’d be willing to be photographed for the project. He leapt at the chance so we headed down a small alley where the branch of the Bodycraft studios he was working in was located. Opposite its entrance was a black wall that provided a suitable background.

Dan was very easy to photograph and responded well to direction when I asked him to bring his cigarette to his mouth so I could get the excellent tattoo on the back of his hand in the picture. I liked the colour version of this photograph but wondered what it’d look like in black and white and decided I liked the monochrome version even better.

Dan told me he had worked for Bodycraft for two years as a tattooist. Art, in all its forms, is a massive interest of his and before he moved to Nottingham, he’d been a graffiti artist in Birmingham. You can find out more about Bodycraft here: bodycrafttattoo.com/ and see more of Dan’s work on Instagram: www.instagram.com/thehores/?hl=en I asked Dan who came in for the most tattoos, men or women? Women by far was his answer and then he said they also sit better.

What else does Dan like doing? Growing Bonsai trees was his answer, adding that he has been doing this for around two years and has over 40 of them.

Dan was very easy to talk to and I found out quite a few things about him. Both his greatest and poorest achievement was coming 3rd in a big Secret Wolves battle. The thing he likes best about Nottingham is the independent shops and the worst thing are drivers. His first star crush had been on Jennifer Aniston and the one thing he can’t live without is his girlfriend.

If you’ve been reading through my last five strangers, you’ll have discovered that a few of them that I photographed this day either know each other or are connected in some way – this coincidence continues with my next stranger.

Thank-you Dan for agreeing to being photographed for my stranger project and I hope you like your portrait.

This picture is #211 in the 100 Strangers project, yes, I’ve decided to do a third round. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page
